John Cowman
John qualified as a physiotherapist from Trinity College Dublin in 1995, following which he immediately undertook his MSc in research while concurrently undertaking studies in statistics and psychology.  Prior to emigrating to England in 1998 he established a model of Primary Care access to physiotherapy for the Irish Health Department, worked successfully as a private musculoskeletal practitioner and lectured in undergraduate and postgraduate statistics and research methodologies at Trinity College.

Within the English system he has operated as a lead physiotherapy researcher at Kings College Hospital and has worked on several international drug trials.  Returning to full clinical practice in 2000, he began to develop an interest in management and has progressed to Associate Director level at Havering PCT.

His personal and professional development has included a wide range of academic pursuits, including transformational leadership, strategy development, systemic management and, most recently, participation in the development programme for social entrepreneurs through the Skoll Institute of Oxford University.  He continues to work as a private clinical practitioner in the field of musculoskeletal and strongly believes the realisation of improved efficiency and effectives relies upon the alignment of clinical excellence with managerial expertise.

His talk will focus on the importance of discharge summaries in aligning the right human and fiscal resources in the community and non-acute beds to ensure patients remain out of the acute as much as possible.

With 21 years experience of delivering Lean solutions to mission-critical organisations, the same successful principles are being used in healthcare. This has enabled over 200 NHS Trusts to meet government targets, streamline processes and satisfy local clinical requirements. An example of this is where Lean techniques have been used to improve the discharge summary process, enabling timely, accurate and consistent delivery of patient data directly to GP practices and systems.
